Summer Bridge Programs at Prairie View A&M University serve as an opportunity for incoming first-year students to get a jump-start on college life. But, with on-campus functions still limited due to COVID-19, this year’s experience will be different from past programs.
From June 22 to August 5, PVAMU will host its inaugural Virtual Summer Experience Program. The program will allow a select group of incoming freshmen to prepare for the upcoming semester in this new reality.
“We are providing an opportunity for our freshmen students to still connect to the university this summer during this unprecedented time,” explained University Summer Bridge Programs Manager Jamila Clayton. “During the Virtual Summer Experience Program, our incoming students will have the opportunity to experience the cultural richness and academic scholarship that Prairie View A&M University has to offer.”
Students will work closely with faculty and staff from PVAMU’s eight colleges and schools to learn about degree programs, courses, and career opportunities. Workshops and presentations detailing resources and academic support services on campus and the student organizations they can get involved in will also be provided during the six-week experience.
“Students will receive laptops from the university to utilize during the program to engage with their peers, faculty, and staff. Additionally, they will receive a scholarship that covers their tuition and fees for up to six credit hours,” said Clayton. “During this time of change, we felt that it was still possible to organize a general Virtual Summer Bridge Experience for our incoming fall 2020 freshmen. With the use of technology and creativity, a select number of students can still experience Summer Bridge without physically being on campus.”
Though it may differ from summer bridge programs of the past, this opportunity for students to launch their PVAMU experience is not one to be missed.
“I am very excited for our incoming freshmen students to have an opportunity to participate in this program!” exclaimed Clayton. “I love working with our freshmen students and providing academic programs to help ensure they have a great start to their collegiate career.”
